a 4 years old male guinea pig presented due to anorexia and "smelly urine".
The abdomen was very painful, especially in the area of the urinary bladder.

Also noted poor body condition

Findings:

The stomach is filled with air. There are also some mildly distended bowel loops filled with air, probably due to ileus as a result of the anorexia.

The urinary bladder is distended.

There is a round mineral opacity caudo-ventral to the pelvis.

Diagnosis:

Urinary obstruction due to a urethral calculus.

Discussion:

Urethral calculi is a common problem in guinea pigs. The majority of the calculi are composed of calcium carbonate and the etiopathogenesis is not known. The urethra of guinea pigs can be 3-4 milimeters wide.

Their penis is s-shaped therfore urethral catheterization can be challenging.

Wow! the size of the stone is quite impressive!! I guess they do have a relatively wide urethra
